The European banking industry is undergoing a process of change. After years of intensive regulation, we now face a number of new challenges. Weak earnings and high costs are forcing banks to automate processes and make them more efficient. In addition, the number of new competitors is growing and the banking business is on the verge of profound change. The risks of overregulation and misregulation have increased due to stronger interference.  Synergies from European cross-border mergers are difficult to realize because the European markets are still very different and – unlike in the USA, for example – there are language barriers.
